GQ October 2010

GQ magazine features a selection of my close-up portraits in its October 2010 issue. You can even win a camera if you can identify all seventeen of the people featured. I suspect it’s not a Leica M9 Titanium. I’m also pretty sure it doesn’t feature the Noctilux-M 50mm F/0.95. If it was I’d be generating enough pseudo-personae to guarantee permanent residency at the local multiple personality disorder support group. If you can relate to my pain re. the Leica you might be interested in this. I want it so bad it’s aching in my nether-regions…

Sean Smith of Tyred

I love the fact that being a photographer gives me the opportunity to use my GPS and head off to places I haven’t been before and meet people I probably wouldn’t otherwise. This morning I headed off to Elsie’s River (the name is almost certainly cooler than the place) to shoot Sean Smith of Tyred for GQ magazine. Tyred is the brainchild of Sean and Delarey Wagner and they’re part of a growing number of designers giving a second life to materials and items formerly destined for the junkyard and landfill sites.

I most recently saw tyres being used on a community build project for a residential home on the BBC program Grand Designs. Having become increasingly aware of the need to recycle our junk over the last few years I think it’s a great idea.

Perhaps when I get off my soapbox I’ll go and recycle that as well.

The November ’09 issue of GQ magazine features a great interview with Protea batsman Herschelle Gibbs. It’s quite a revealing and honest and I think that’s down to the respect that my good friend Steve Smith commands in the SA sporting community. As per usual with my GQ assignments, it was a real treat to shoot the photos.

OK, it’s clearly been too long since my last post. In an attempt to divert your attention from the need for some lame-arse excuse I’ll share these little-known – but utterly essential – factoids with you. Beatles taste like apples, wasps like pine-nuts and worms like fried bacon. Also, in 1386 a pig was executed by public hanging for the murder of a child in France.

Now that we have that off our chests, I shot some cool guys for the November ’08 issue of GQ magazine including their 2008 Best Dressed Men feature. It should be on the shelves for another week or so, so check it out if you have the chance.

I found a video gallery featuring some slinky tunes of the photos here.
