The third anniversary issue of One Small Seed is on the shelves now and features a collection of portraits I did to accompany a somewhat voyeuristic peek inside the slightly disturbing – and somewhat scatological – psyche of a South African comedian. Featured are Judy Jake, Bevan Cullinan, Joey Rashdien, Loyiso Golo and John Vlismas – whom you’ll know I love photographing. Make sure to grab a copy, it’s a seriously great mag.

Had the pleasure of doing a fly-on-the-wall (as opposed to a fly in the ointment) shoot in the Western Province locker room with the players this Friday night. A really cool bunch of guys and I now find myself considering the Curry Cup points log with keen interest. The Bulls victory over the Cheethas this weekend has delivered them a semi-final booth, so up to them now.

The real treat however was sitting in the cheap-seats among the real supporters and watching the game. They’re an animated bunch and I found myself laughing more than at a stand-up comedy show. Some choice quotes: “Bollaaa, waaas jou mes?!”, “Ricky, jou jakkals – wa maak jy met daai bottel in jou sak”, “Jonathan Kaplan, yellow caaaard, yelloww caaaard” and addressed to a pair of pissed pommies whom couldn’t stop singing (read shouting) and didn’t understand a word of Afrikaans: “Julle’s lekka gesuip ne?!”

I really have to chalk this one up as one of the quintessential South African experiences – something everyone should experience at least once. And it really helps if you understand Afrikaans!

The spring 2008 issue of BRAVO! magazine features my work in their “Trendsetter” issue. I’d like to thank my team of elves for their sterling efforts in deploying the smoke machines and the strategic positioning of the mirrors. I also had the pleasure of making a portrait for legendary author Marlene van Niekerk for the same issue.

A Pair o’ Shannons

Right, so despite the fact that I was clogged up and worked like hell to get the shots I had a pretty cool weekend up at Sun City taking pics at the Million Dollar Poker tournament. It was really interesting observing players at this level – they’re very good at what they do and obviously when you’re consistently competing at this level it’s far more than a simple game of chance.

Anyway, I did some travel shots of the resort, some reportage style shots of the players in action as well as some selected portrait shots. Hmm, while we’re on the subject of gambling and odds, I was wondering what the chances were of photographing two girls called Shannon back-to-back. Not exactly the most common name methinks…

Anyhow, the first was Shannon Elizabeth of American Pie fame. The second is Shannon Smith whom is closely affiliated with the SA Poker scene.

I’ve got to say, that road to Sun City really sucks. 60 and 80 km/h zones are the order of the day and it really feels like you’re looking for parking on that Pilansberg road. Probably to help you dodge the goats and cattle next to the road.

Hmmm, and that Cabana hotel is a real classy joint – they don’t just have any ol’ plastic flowers in the rooms – they have plastic orchids no less.

Airport Bloggin’

Hah, it feels like I’m spending far too much time at airports at the moment and much too little time with my all the girls in my life in Cape Town. It’s the nature of the beast though I guess – as long as there’s exciting shoots at the other end of the trip. So I’m guessing that it’s a bit lame plastering your own face all over your post, but I gotta admint that I still get quite excited when I see my work up in lights – even if it’s just a lightbox at the airport. This was the September issue of Sports Illustrated. I did a cover shoot and photo essay about a day in the life of a Flasher Girl. I think I have good vibes with Durbs. The previous time our rental car got upgraded to a merc and this time for some reason I got upgraded and flew business class both ways. Perhaps I should move there, I believe the bunny chow rocks!
